Chris Aslett was granted an Honours Degree in Biotechnology at the University of Leeds in 2000. This was followed by a Master of Research degree in Applied Fish Biology from the University of Plymouth majoring in Coral Diseases. This second degree coupled with many years as a Marine Aquatic enthusiast and a grounding in the Retail environment, has enabled him to pursue a career as a “Suitably Qualified Person” for Aquatic Species under The Pet Animals Act.
Local Authorities are required to issue Pet Licences, which in the case of Aquatic species includes fish. Where a traditional Pet Shop keeps aquatic species as an extension of its general pet stock, professional supervision is normally carried out by a Veterinary Surgeon acting as a “Suitably Qualified Person”. However Marine Species are normally kept by specialist aquatic outlets and very often vets feel unwilling to take on such specialised work. In such circumstances Chris offers to act as the “Suitably Qualified Person”, offering his services either by the invitation of a Veterinary Surgeon or directly to the outlet through local authority introduction.
This specialised service, involves a site visit and examination of the systems used and an assessment of the staff knowledge of the routine maintenance required to attain the levels of water quality required under the Pet Animals Act. In addition to verbal advice, a detailed written report with recommendations is prepared for the site manager and a copy forwarded to the Veterinary Surgeon or Local Authority arranging the visit. Veterinary Surgeons or Local Authorities interested in this service are invited to contact Chris on the e-mail links provided.
During 2005 and 2006 Chris was a regular contributor of Scientific Articles for Marine World under the following titles. “Coral Disease : Cause or Coincidence” and “Nature versus Nurture”, the latter is available using the Link provided. Back issue numbers 22 through to 27 containing the articles are available from Marine World.
Following his spell at Plymouth Marine University, Chris returned to Leeds and opened a Marines only outlet “The Reef Ranch” in 2004. In a very short time it was recognised as a centre of excellence for Livestock due to the application of high standards of scientific and nutritional care.
Alongside the retail activity, Chris developed his Consultancy business based on Home Visits and it became clear that the increasing requests from both Home and Commercial customers could not be satisfied from a retail base. The Reef Ranch was closed in 2007 to enable Chris to devote more time to his Training and Consultancy work for which there was clearly a urgent need.
Chris passionately believes that with informed training and a scientific approach to husbandry, it is possible to reduce commercial losses and develop Centres of Excellence able to withstand the economic downturn affecting the industry.
Chris now offers Nationwide Consultancy & Training Services for both Home and Commercial clients. |
